Year 1




In your first year in Experimental and Foundation Studies (EFS), you will be assigned an advisor selected from your fall semester EFS faculty. This timeline includes critical advising events and information for first-year students choosing majors. To find the name of your advisor, log into student planning.

Year 1
First year advising highlights:
  • Registering for Wintersession (your first opportunity to  investigate a course of interest in your possible major)

  • Selecting a major!

  • Considering a concentration
  • Researching off-campus global learning opportunities

By the end of the first year you should have:  33 credits

  • 18 in EFS
  • 3 for your Wintersession elective
  • 12 in Liberal Arts 
New Student Orientation

September 3 – 6, 2017

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) organizes Summer Orientation and the fall New Student Orientation for undergraduate and graduate students. 

RISD Orientation

First Day of Fall Semester

September 7, 2017

  • Fall Semester begins and first year students introduced to academic advisors
  • Add/drop registration period begins. If you have questions about adding/dropping a class, consult your advisor.

October 6 – 8, 2017

Open Studios by departments on RISD Weekend. This is great opportunity to explore different majors!

Remember to talk with your advisor about global opportunities, travel courses, internships, getting involved with student groups, and more.

There’s a lot you can do beyond the classroom that will enhance your time at RISD and introduce new possibilities and opportunities. Take advantage of as much as you can.

Mid-semester warnings

Students are notified via RISD email if they receive a midterm warning of “unsatisfactory” performance. If you receive an “unsatisfactory” you should contact your advisor as soon as possible.

Meet Your Major

End of February

Wintersession or post- Wintersession RISD 360 hosts “Meet your Major” (at Met refectory)

Major Declaration

February 26 – March 2, 2018

Required department meetings with declared first year students

Second & third weeks of March

This is your chance to learn more and ask questions about your declared major.

If you decide to change your major you need to come to the EFS office and complete required paperwork.
